The holiday follows the festival of Sukkot and marks the conclusion of the High Holiday season that begins with Rosh Hashanah. Rather than looking back on the completed readings alone, Simchat Torah emphasizes that Torah study is continuous, with the final portion and the opening chapter of Genesis read during the same service. The date of Simchat Torah is determined by the Hebrew lunisolar calendar, so it changes each year on the Gregorian calendar. In Israel, the holiday is observed on the 22nd day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, coinciding with Shemini Atzeret. In many Jewish communities outside Israel, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are observed on separate consecutive days, making Simchat Torah the 23rd day of Tishrei. As a result, the corresponding Gregorian date varies each year, generally falling between late September and late October.
