Epiphany, also widely known as Three Kings Day, is a Christian feast observed every year on January 6. The holiday commemorates the visit of the Magi, or Wise Men, to the infant Jesus as described in the Gospel of Matthew. In many Christian traditions, the day symbolizes the revelation of Jesus to the wider world beyond the Jewish community. Depending on denomination and local custom, Epiphany may also commemorate Jesus' baptism or the miracle at the Wedding at Cana, making it an important celebration within the Christmas season. The date is fixed because it is part of the traditional Christian liturgical calendar rather than being calculated from Easter or a lunar calendar. In many Western Christian churches, Epiphany is always celebrated on January 6, although some denominations transfer its observance to the nearest Sunday for pastoral reasons. The historical feast day itself, however, remains January 6. Epiphany is celebrated in many countries across Europe, Latin America, and other parts of the world. Traditions vary widely but often include church services, family meals, processions, gift-giving, and the sharing of special pastries such as Rosca de Reyes in Mexico or Roscón de Reyes in Spain. In several cultures, children receive gifts on Three Kings Day rather than—or in addition to—Christmas Day, reflecting the gifts brought by the Magi. A common misconception is that the Bible specifies there were exactly three Wise Men. In fact, the biblical account mentions three gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—but does not state the number of visitors. The tradition of three kings developed over time through Christian interpretation. Today, Epiphany remains an important religious observance while also serving as a cherished cultural celebration in many countries.
