Raksha Bandhan, often called Rakhi, is a Hindu festival celebrating the bond of love, protection, and mutual respect between brothers and sisters. In return, brothers traditionally give gifts and pledge to support and protect their sisters. Raksha Bandhan is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Shravana. Because it follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar, its date changes each year on the Gregorian calendar. The festival is widely celebrated across India and Nepal and by Hindu communities around the world. Celebrations begin with families gathering for a traditional ceremony in which sisters apply a tilak to their brothers' foreheads, tie the rakhi, perform an aarti, and exchange sweets. Brothers present gifts and offer blessings, while families often enjoy festive meals together. Markets are filled with colorful rakhis, greeting cards, sweets, and gifts in the days leading up to the festival. A common misconception is that Raksha Bandhan is only for biological brothers and sisters. In reality, the festival celebrates broader values of affection, trust, care, and lifelong support, and many people exchange rakhis with cousins, relatives, close friends, soldiers, teachers, or others with whom they share a meaningful bond.
