Corpus Christi is a Christian feast that honors the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion or the Blessed Sacrament. The name 'Corpus Christi' is Latin for 'Body of Christ.' The feast is observed primarily by the Roman Catholic Church and is also celebrated by some Anglican, Lutheran, and other Christian communities. It provides an opportunity for worship, thanksgiving, and public expressions of faith centered on the Eucharist, one of Christianity's most important sacraments. Corpus Christi is a movable feast because its date depends on Easter. In the Roman Catholic calendar, it is celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, which is sixty days after Easter Sunday. In many countries where Thursday is not a public holiday, the liturgical celebration is transferred to the following Sunday. Because Easter changes each year according to a traditional ecclesiastical calculation based on the solar calendar and lunar phases, Corpus Christi also falls on a different date each year, usually between late May and late June. Countries such as Poland, Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Austria, and parts of Germany have long-standing Corpus Christi traditions, with some communities observing the day as a public holiday. A common misconception is that Corpus Christi commemorates the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. While the Eucharist was instituted on Holy Thursday, Corpus Christi was established to provide a joyful celebration outside the solemn atmosphere of Holy Week. Today, the feast emphasizes devotion to the Eucharist and its significance in Christian worship rather than recalling a single historical event.
