Unlike holidays that occur on the same day each year, Pentecost is a movable feast. Its date is determined by counting fifty days from Easter Sunday, including Easter itself. Since Easter is calculated using a combination of the solar calendar and the phases of the moon, Pentecost also changes every year, typically falling between early May and mid-June in Western Christianity. Eastern Orthodox churches often celebrate Pentecost on a different date because they use a different method for calculating Easter. Pentecost is observed with special church services, prayers, hymns, baptisms, confirmations, and readings from the New Testament. In many traditions, churches are decorated in red to symbolize the Holy Spirit and the tongues of fire described in the biblical account. Some countries also recognize Pentecost Monday as a public holiday, although this varies by nation. A common misconception is that Pentecost celebrates only the Holy Spirit. While the descent of the Holy Spirit is central to the feast, Pentecost also marks the beginning of the apostles' public ministry and the spread of Christianity. For many Christians, it represents the unity of believers, the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit, and the birth of the Church as a global community of faith.
