Purim is a joyful Jewish festival that commemorates the events described in the biblical Book of Esther. According to the story, Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai helped save the Jewish people of ancient Persia from a plot to destroy them. The holiday celebrates courage, resilience, and the reversal of fortune, themes that have made Purim one of the most festive occasions in the Jewish calendar. The name 'Purim' comes from the word 'pur,' meaning 'lot,' referring to the lots that were cast by Haman when choosing the date for his planned attack. Purim is observed on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar and therefore changes date each year on the Gregorian calendar. In leap years of the Hebrew calendar, it is celebrated in Adar II, the second Adar, ensuring that the holiday remains in late winter or early spring. Because the Hebrew calendar is lunisolar, the corresponding Gregorian date typically falls in February or March and varies annually. The holiday is marked by several traditional observances. The Book of Esther, also known as the Megillah, is read aloud in synagogues, and listeners often use noisemakers called graggers whenever Haman's name is mentioned. Families and friends exchange gifts of food known as mishloach manot, charitable donations are given to people in need, and festive meals are shared. In many communities, costumes, plays, and parades add to the celebratory atmosphere, especially for children. A common misconception is that Purim is simply a Jewish costume festival. While costumes have become a popular and colorful tradition, they are not the central purpose of the holiday. Purim primarily commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people as recounted in the Book of Esther and emphasizes generosity, community, remembrance, and gratitude.
