Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of the most important Hindu festivals and marks the culmination of the nine-day Navratri celebration. The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil and is associated with two major traditions. In much of northern India, it commemorates Lord Rama's victory over the demon king Ravana as described in the Ramayana. In many eastern and southern regions, it marks the triumph of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the victory of righteousness, courage, and divine power over evil. Although these traditions emphasize different stories, they share the same central message of moral victory and renewal. Dussehra follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar and is observed on the tenth day (Dashami) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Ashwin. Because the Hindu calendar is based on lunar phases while remaining aligned with the solar year, the festival falls on different Gregorian dates each year, usually during September or October. It is celebrated immediately after the nine nights of Navratri, making it the festival's grand conclusion. Celebrations vary across regions. Large theatrical performances known as Ramlila reenact scenes from the Ramayana, often ending with the burning of towering effigies of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhakarna. In West Bengal, Durga Puja concludes with idol immersion processions known as Visarjan. Many people visit temples, exchange greetings, begin new ventures, or participate in community fairs and cultural events. In parts of southern India, families also display decorative arrangements known as Golu or Bombe Habba during the Navratri period. A common misconception is that Dussehra commemorates only Rama's victory over Ravana. While this is the dominant tradition in many regions, millions of people also observe the day as the conclusion of Durga Puja, celebrating Goddess Durga's victory over Mahishasura. Both traditions emphasize the triumph of good over evil and remain deeply significant across Hindu communities worldwide.
