The word 'Songkran' comes from a Sanskrit term referring to the movement or transition of the sun into a new position, reflecting its historical connection to the solar calendar rather than a lunar calendar. Unlike many Asian New Year celebrations that follow a lunisolar calendar, Songkran is observed on fixed dates in April. The Thai government officially designates April 13–15 as the Songkran holiday each year, making it one of the country's most anticipated annual celebrations. Some provinces extend festivities beyond these dates, but the official observance always begins on April 13. One of the festival's best-known traditions is the friendly water-splashing that takes place in streets across Thailand. Originally, gently pouring scented water over the hands of elders and over Buddha images symbolized purification, respect, and good fortune for the coming year. Modern celebrations have expanded into large public water fights, attracting both locals and international visitors. Alongside these festivities, many families visit temples, make merit, clean homes, build sand pagodas, and spend time with relatives. A common misconception is that Songkran is only a nationwide water fight. While water festivities have become internationally famous, they represent just one part of a much older cultural and religious tradition. For many Thai families, the holiday remains a time for honoring elders, practicing Buddhist customs, remembering ancestors, and welcoming the new year with acts of kindness, reflection, and renewal.
