The festival commemorates Krishna's birth in Mathura and his teachings, which are central to Hindu philosophy, particularly through the Bhagavad Gita. Janmashtami is one of the most widely observed Hindu festivals, attracting millions of devotees across India, Nepal, and Hindu communities around the world. The festival follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar and is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Bhadrapada. While many temples hold midnight ceremonies because tradition associates Krishna's birth with that time, celebrations often last throughout the day and into the night. For many devotees, the festival is both a joyful celebration of Krishna's birth and an opportunity to reflect on his teachings about righteousness, devotion, and selfless action.
