The date is fixed on the calendar because it marks the anniversary of that specific historical event, rather than being calculated from a lunar cycle or a moveable formula, so it always falls on July 4 regardless of the day of the week. It is a federal public holiday in the United States, meaning most government offices, schools, and many businesses close for the day. Celebrations typically include fireworks displays, parades, backyard barbecues and cookouts, and the widespread display of the American flag and red-white-and-blue decorations in patriotic colors. Many cities and towns hold organized fireworks shows in the evening, often accompanied by concerts or community gatherings earlier in the day. A point of nuance often overlooked is that the Declaration of Independence was actually approved by the Continental Congress on July 2, 1776, and the final text was not formally signed by most delegates until weeks later; July 4 is the date that appears on the printed document itself and the date most strongly associated with its adoption and public announcement, which is why it became fixed in tradition as the day of commemoration rather than July 2. John Adams himself reportedly believed July 2 would be the date future generations would celebrate, a prediction that did not hold. The holiday is sometimes casually described as marking the "end" of the American Revolutionary War, but the war itself continued for several more years after 1776, and the Declaration marks the start of the nation's formal claim to independence rather than the conflict's conclusion.
