A common misconception is that the tradition originated in the United States; in fact, it descends from earlier European customs, including ones involving badgers or hedgehogs, that were brought to Pennsylvania by German-speaking immigrant communities and adapted using the groundhog, an animal native to the region. It is also worth noting that studies examining the accuracy of groundhog predictions over long periods have generally found the forecasts to perform no better than chance, underscoring that the day is best understood as a cultural and community tradition rather than a reliable meteorological method.
