Within Mexico, the day is primarily observed as a regional holiday, with the most significant civic commemorations, including a large annual parade, taking place in the city of Puebla itself, where the battle occurred; it is not a nationwide public holiday with a general day off work across the country. The holiday's scale and character are notably different in the United States, where over the course of the 20th century it grew into a much larger occasion, particularly within Mexican-American communities, and later became associated more broadly with Mexican culture and heritage. In many US cities, the day is now marked by festivals, music, food, and cultural events, and it has also become closely tied to promotions for Mexican food and beverages, particularly around cuisine and margaritas, a commercial association that has shaped much of its modern public image outside of Mexico. A frequent misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day; that occasion is actually celebrated on September 16, marking a separate historical event, the start of the war for independence from Spain in 1810, decades before the Battle of Puebla took place. The confusion likely persists in part because Cinco de Mayo receives far more attention outside Mexico than the country's actual independence day does, despite the Battle of Puebla holding comparatively modest significance in Mexico's own national narrative.
